“As a teen, Chaz Bono majored in drama at the High School for Performing Arts in New York and later studied at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in L.A.”

Bono, 46, is currently starring on stage as the unhinged mathematician Robert in Noisy Nest’s production of David Auburn’s Tony Award-winning play “Proof,” with performances through April 12 at the Lounge Theatre in his hometown of Los Angeles.

The role marks the transgender icon’s first foray into dramatic theater. “Proof” tells the story of Catherine, Robert’s daughter, who inherits more than the math gene from him. After his death, she struggles beyond grief alongside her estranged sister and one of her father’s pupils to find value and meaning in the 103 notebooks that he’s left behind.

Bono flexes his acting muscles by appearing in flashback sequences at various ages throughout the play.

As a teen, Chaz Bono — then known as Chastity — majored in drama at the High School for Performing Arts in New York and later studied at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in L.A. before taking “a very long hiatus.” It wasn’t until after the gender reassignment surgery and cameos on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “Degrassi” that Chaz, as he is now known, decided to dedicate himself to acting.

“[Acting] is always been the only thing I’ve wanted to do. I know that sounds strange, my not pursuing it until this late in life, but that’s honestly the truth.”

Look for him as a junkie/hoarder in the forthcoming independent film “Dirty” and at the next Hollywood Fringe Festival with the musical parody company 30 Minute Musicals.
