LSFTI’s Sizzling Summer Movie Watchlist

Written by Emma Duchesneau

Looking for a way to beat the heat this summer? Stay cool, stay inside, and prepare for the most epic summer movie marathon. We have something for everyone – summer flings, iconic blockbusters, campy horror, water park antics, and more. But most importantly, each movie features one of our many notable alumni.

1. The Seven Year Itch

Alumni: Marilyn Monroe

This Broadway sensation turned film explores the relationship between Richard Sherman, played by Tom Ewell, and his neighbor, played by Marilyn Monroe. One of the Institute’s most famous alumni, Monroe studied directly under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. While the pair tries to evade the sweltering New York City heat wave, Richard’s morals are put to the test, as he has to choose between staying faithful to his wife or giving in to a future with his new neighbor. This movie also features the iconic moment of Marilyn Monroe standing over the subway grate in her white dress.

2. Dirty Dancing

Alumni: Jerry Orbach

An uneventful family trip to the Catskills turns into the summer romance of a lifetime as young Baby, played by Jennifer Grey, falls for resort dance instructor Johnny, played by Patrick Swayze. Their romance progresses as Baby discovers a passion for dance, only further igniting the flame. Lee Strasberg-trained Jerry Orbach plays Baby’s father, Dr. Jake Houseman, the level-headed parent who opposes the summer fling and the passionate dancing that comes with it.

3. Grown Ups

Alumni: Adam Sandler

A lake trip amongst old friends becomes an unforgettable summer as five men revert to their childhood selves, bringing their familes along for the ride. Notable alumnus Adam Sandler is joined by real-life friends, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider, as they venture through woods, lake, and water park, trying to instill a sense of adventure in their children as well as rekindle the bond they once had as kids. A hilariously rambunctious story, sure to leave you wanting more (but not to fret, there is a sequel!).

4. The Flamingo Kid

Alumni: Matt Dillon

Jeffery Clancy, played by LSTFI alum Matt Dillon, has just started a summer job at the bougie Long Island beach club and is way over his head. Not only that, but now he must balance his newfound interest in member Carla Samson (Janet Jones) with his new love for the flashy lifestyle. This film explores a coming-of-age journey for Jeffrey, a boy who needs to go out and see more of the world before learning to be grateful for what he has.

5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Alumni: Lainie Kazan

Feel like your family is hard to please? This iconic film is the ultimate battle of getting your family’s approval on the person you’re dating — and makes for the perfect summer rom-com. Toula, played by Nia Vardalos, is head over heels for Ian, played by John Corbett. The only problem? He’s not Greek. LSFTI alumna Lainie Kazan plays the overbearing yet lovable mother of the bride, and one of the many family members Ian must win over to secure a happy future for the couple.

6. Lake Placid

Alumni: Bridget Fonda

When a sleepy lakeside town is shocked by a series of deaths related to an elusive creature, it’s up to wildlife officer Jack Wells, played by Bill Pullman, to put an end to it. With the help of paleontologist Kelly Scott, played by alumna Bridget Fonda, and Sheriff Hank Keough, played by Brendan Gleeson, the team must solve the mystery in this campy summer thriller. Niece of Lee Strasberg-trained legend Jane Fonda, Bridget Fonda studied at LSTFI through NYU Tisch.

7. Jurassic Park

Alumni: Laura Dern

Can’t wait any longer for your science classes to pick back up? Dive into this prehistoric adventure of a lifetime. Alumna Laura Dern is among the team of specialists invited to Jurassic Park, an early-stage theme park showcasing dinosaurs who have been brought back to life with the help of scientists. This classic film is the perfect summer watch for those looking for adventure, wonder, and groundbreaking storytelling.
