Stanislavsky’s The Three Sisters

The Three Sisters: A Staging of Act III

by Anton Chekhov

translated by Randall Jarrell

directed by Dr. Sergei Tcherkasski

This year, The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute’s 50th Anniversary is proud to be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Among the many celebrations, the school invited Dr. Sergei Tcherkasski from Russia to conduct a two-week long masterclass, culminating in a production of the final act of Chekhov’s The Three Sisters. This play held great significance for Lee Strasberg, who attended the Moscow Art Theatre’s production in New York in 1923. He spoke highly of Stanislavsky’s production throughout his directing and teaching career, and went on to stage his own production of The Three Sisters in 1964. Our 50th Anniversary production of the final act presented Stanislavsky’s original production plan for the play.

The small cast was composed of current students, faculty, and alumni, selected via a competitive audition process. The production was featured in Broadway World, which cited the Dr. Tcherkasski’s direction as “extraordinary” and the cast as “marvelous”. As a part of the special occasion, Ana Moioli (Irina) read an excerpt written by Shirley Knight, who originated the role of Irina in the Broadway rendition. Following the production, the halls of LSTFI were open as a gallery, showcasing archival photos from Strasberg’s 1964 production and subsequent 1966 film adaptation. This evening marked just one of the incredible moments in the history of The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute’s 50 year.
