Comet Orphan at the Cannes Film Market: A Week to Remember

Comet Orphan, our short comedy mockumentary developed and produced by students, alumni, and faculty of The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute (LSTFI), made its international debut this May at the Cannes Short Film Corner — a major industry platform within the Marché du Film at the Festival de Cannes.

From red carpets to premiere screenings, the Comet Orphan producing team made the most of every moment in France. They met fellow filmmakers from around the world, attended panels, networking events, and introduced their work to curious and enthusiastic audiences.

Private Market Screening

Comet Orphan was presented in a private market screening for accredited industry professionals on May 21st, showcasing LSTFI filmmaking for the first time to global creatives, distributors, and producers.

“We are thrilled to have Comet Orphan participate in one of the world’s largest and most prestigious international film markets,” said Executive Producer and LSTFI Head of Film, Sheldon Larry (formerly USC Film & Television Department). “This platform provides a unique opportunity for our filmmakers and actors to connect with a global audience.”

Learning, Connection, Celebration

Hyejin “Grace” Park, Comet Orphan writer and director, shared what it felt like to watch their work land with a new audience:

“…Introducing the film with our one-liner and seeing people burst into laughter was unforgettable. We met so many incredible folks who were genuinely excited about the project… and yes, the Comet Orphan T-shirt was a total hit!

Our screening was a beautiful moment. People laughed, leaned in, and told us afterward they wanted to see more. The entire experience was a whirlwind of learning, connection, and celebration, and I’m truly grateful.”

Comet Orphan producer, Arwen Wang, reflected on the emotional impact of sharing the film on such a global stage:

“Bringing Comet Orphan to the Cannes Film Market was surreal and deeply moving. It reminded me why we tell stories — to reach across boundaries and find one another in the dark. I’m endlessly grateful to everyone who believed in this project from the very beginning…”

LSTFI Associate Degree Program Filmmakers

Natalie Gimon Valencia, Comet Orphan producer and alumni of the LSTFI Associate Degree Program, speaks to her first Cannes experience:

“Cannes was an absolute whirlwind — in the best way possible. One moment you’re at a breakfast meeting, the next you’re rushing to a screening or a panel, all while pinching yourself that you’re actually in the French Riviera. You’re surrounded by artists you’ve admired your entire life, casually walking the red carpet beside you. Comet Orphan is the result of so much love, energy, and hard work from an incredible team, and it’s so exciting to share this story that so many can relate to. Being there this year with a project I’m incredibly proud of was a true dream come true. I’m reminded how much I love what I do!”

Comet Orphan stars another alumni of LSTFI’s Associate Degree Program, Maria Jimena Gastelum, who gives an undeniable breakout performance that grounds the deeply human story with a subtle and striking alien touch.

A Proud Moment for LSTFI

We are so proud of the Comet Orphan team for their hard work, vision, and creative spirit. Their experience at Cannes is a shining example of what’s possible when emerging artists are given the tools, training, and support to bring their stories to life.

The entire producing team expresses a sincere thank you to their incredible cast and crew, The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, and their Seed&Spark donors: “This wouldn’t have been possible without you.”

Producer Arwen Wang wrapped up her trip to Cannes full of gratitude and excitement for what’s to come, saying, “We’re just getting started, and I can’t wait to share Comet Orphan with more hearts around the world.”
