Synopsis

Inter-Tribal is about a group of indigenous people who experience the pangs of heartbreak, loss, and resilience. The play begins in a bar, where we meet Hattie, Baby, and Joyce. We learn that Hattie is Baby’s grandmother. Joyce is Baby’s wilder friend. In the next scene, we see Hattie’s living room. Hattie speaks to Baby about how Joyce is a poor influence on her. We also learn that Baby and Hattie are grieving Baby’s mother, as well as Baby’s child. Nonetheless, Baby is insistent on going to a pow-wow with Joyce, knowing that her crush, Eddie, will be there. At the pow-wow, we learn that Joyce has her eyes set on Eddie’s friend (Two-Step) and that the two can’t be seen until dark because Two-Step is in a relationship. Meanwhile, Joyce becomes increasingly drunk which incurs the frustration of Baby. Harley, a guy from the pow-wow, sees Joyce and tries to get with her. Joyce refuses and continues her attention onto Two-Step, who ends up saying cruel things to her. Eddie steps in and calls Two-Step out on his misbehavior. Meanwhile, Harley returns and sexually assaults Joyce; men help save her. Back at Hattie’s, Baby laments the pain of her and her friend. Hattie and Baby discuss indigenous resilience, how they have to overcome white indoctrination and toxic men. Then, Joyce and Eddie enter and Hattie welcomes them all in.
